When some tavernas started offering free sunbeds all hell broke loose. Licences are issued by the Municipality, and they're not cheap, so the sunbed vendors claimed that this was an unfair practice.

Rumour has it that fines were issued, bottoms smacked, and out-and-out warfare avoided.

Licences are decided by some process I wot not of just before (or sometimes after) the season starts. There appears to be a bit of leeway during low season periods, but I doubt if anyone's getting a free sunbed during mid to high season.

Hi Maxg; When we left last year in August Waves had started to do free sunbeds if you bought something from their taverna, I don't know if they were allowed to continue doing so, like Jimbo says they may have been fined, or asked to stop. I am sure the other sunbed vendors wouldn't have been happy as this is their living. Along the beach at Manthos he always has a few sunbeds to use if you buy something, he used to have the sunbeds in his garden next to the beach, last year they were on the beach. 8)

Some places were giving vouchers - 2 Euros towards lunch.

Looking forward immensely to this year's sunbed dramas!

Once word got around that sunbeds were free in San Stefanos families were driving or busing in from Sidari. The "car park" on the beach was overflowing and a lot of them brought their own packed lunches,so the tavernas were making nothing from supplying the beds.
The old method of renting areas of the beach to the sunbed owners was far better and I don't know why they changed it,surely the
local council made more money that way.

Yes there were fines doled out, and maybe even court cases. I was in a taverna when the astynomia were going round with the notices.

Has anyone found out the cost of sunbeds this season, The question was asked but I didn't see an answer. When staying at Agios Gordios they had a system of free sunbeds in front of a Taverna if you ate there, I gather from your replies this caused problems last year in SS :)
