Travellers Cheques

Just got back from a (as always) wonderful week. One thing that surprised us was trying to cash travellers cheques (we had some left from last year) - the commission required varied from 5euro per cheque to 3% - a big difference from previous years. Noula explained that it was due to not many places accepting them any more which was definitely news to us. Just worth bearing in mind if anyone was planning on taking them this year!

Travellers cheques are now generally regarded as "old hat"

Yes, the last time I took travellers cheques was to Skiathos in 2009, when a bank wanted 20 euros per transaction to change them. Was a bit annoyed as I'd been persuaded to change only half my remaining cheques, then ended up changing the other half, so it cost me 40 euros! Taken cash ever since, as most hotels now have safes.

We normally only take cash too, we just had some left from a trip to Aruba last year and I thought I would mention it in case anyone wasn't aware!

You're exaggerating Jim, we certainly took them away with us around 12 years ago!!!

We took a few last year and I think SS Travel were charging about 2% of the value, but yes they don't seem to be acceptable anymore.  We tried to change some in Gran Canaria and no one would change any, even the banks!!

Think it was 1989 when i last used a travelers check,that was in Andora at hotel reception.Since then its been holidays across Greece out in the sticks as you might say so no local banks or hotel receptions.Just had cash money in Dracma as it was then but now the euro is easy for us as we live in Belgium.

Phew , I am pleased you posted this Richard/Jackie/Nathan stops me from making a holiday money mistake.Three years ago we still used travellers cheques in San Steph no problem at all I've been buying bits of cash as the rate has gone up so will carry on doing that I think.

 We have always taken cash   The big question at the moment is when do we buy Euros , the rate gets better every day , but for how long ?

Buy your Euros, stop looking at the exchange rates, enjoy your Holliday.

I agree with Rover. The rate is very good, although it may drop after England's failure tonight in the World Cup.

Also don't forget your specialist overseas credit card, that will be the best exchange rate of all
