Why is it that the Avatars (pictures) keep disappearing??

I have now been advised to disable avatars and attachments and remove all existing files from the server, sorry this sounds a bit drastic but I need to remove this bug and re-install the forum to resolve the issue.
I have the fresh files from the vendor and will attempt to install later this week.
