Plaastic bags for hand luggage

Can somebody tell me what is the point of the plastic bags you have to put your bottles with liquid in is?  When if you are going to blow up the plane well you will do anyway regardless of the fact that you have put the liquid you use in a plastic bag?  Just occured to me then

More to do with being able to keep the contents together and easily visible,
the low content is the deterrent really & hopefully means that it won't do too much damage if it actually did blow!!
