Post by: kemo on September 01, 2009, 06:51:12 PM
To all the lucky people in San Stef just now, Can anyone tell us what is the exchange rate at the moment. We fly out on Friday and at the moment it is not so good over here £1 gets 1 euro 10.

Bevmandy, it's usually a couple of points better than the UK!
I have never known it to be worse!

I guess Tony means 0.98 to the £.

On another note, i received an economic bulletin from Capital Economics today and they're predicting 1.25 euros to the £ by next summer.....i'll take that, even if it is still far away from the 1.45 to the £ of a couple of summers ago.

Heres a tip on exchange rates that works for me.
Get a credit card that charges 0% interest on overseas purchases.Barclaycard charge 2.9% Charge the following to the card.
Everything spent at your hotel .Meals, drinks etc. Charge to your room number. Settle bill at end of stay.
All taverna meals and drinks .
All significant supermarket purchases.
The reason is as follows.
16/10/09
My credit card rate 1.0819 eur/pound.=uk bank rate
uk exchange rate 1.02 euro/pound=uk bank tourist rate.
san stef exchang rate estimated 1.06/pound.
On a small number of occasions i have been charged an extra 2% on the bill in san steff. This is due to the costs incurred by the shopkeeper for accepting my card. This is the worst rate i ever get and this still equals the san steff exchange rate.
This method avoids all the problems with the atm
The only thing to remember you must pay your credit card bill when presented to avoid exorbitant interest charges.
Note 500 euro on my card saves me 30 euro against uk exchange rates.
Do not believe exchanges in the uk that advertise commission free as the vast majority use low rates to start with.
Hope this helps
