And no Emphysema!!! LOL - (of course - the hardened smokers will not want to read below)!!
Emphysema Causes:
Cigarette smoking is by far the most dangerous reason that people develop emphysema, and it is also the most preventable cause. Other risk factors include a deficiency of an enzyme called alpha-1-antitrypsin, air pollution, airway reactivity, heredity, male sex, and age.

The importance of cigarette smoking as a risk factor for developing emphysema cannot be overemphasized. Cigarette smoke contributes to this disease process in 2 ways. It destroys lung tissue, which is the cause of the obstruction, and it causes inflammation and irritation of airways that can cause the disease to get worse.

Destruction of lung tissue occurs in several ways. First, cigarette smoke directly affects the cells in the airway responsible for clearing mucus and other secretions. Occasional smoking temporarily disrupts the sweeping action of tiny hairs called cilia that line the airways. Continued smoking leads to longer dysfunction of the cilia. Long-term exposure to cigarette smoke causes the cilia to disappear from the cells lining the air passages. Without the constant sweeping motion of the cilia, mucous secretions cannot be cleared from the lower respiratory tract. Furthermore, smoke causes mucous secretion to be increased at the same time that the ability to clear the secretions is decreased. The resulting mucous buildup can provide bacteria with a rich source of food and lead to infection.
So give it up - save Loads'a money - live longer - smell sweeter!! Happy new year!

Chris- we will have to send him to Punamar in South America, as he's causing Pundemonium, in certain quarters!
He was thrown out of China for making Puncakes for the Punda's in the zoo!
He was thrown out of Alaska in the Gold fields for illegal Punhandling!
Sandra threw him out for wearing her Punty-hose -
so right now he's gone to a bar - no money of course - and he's in a right Pun-ic!! LOL

From the original question re smoking ban, it was 'banned' again in Greece from September 1st 2010.  What is happening....mmmmmmm!!!!! Some places have ashtrays in and out, some only outside.  How is it being 'policed' who knows ???
Title: Re: smoking
Post by: tonyco1 on September 25, 2010, 02:15:18 AM
Seems to me that the Smoking crowd have got their way, and the owners turn a blind eye to smoking.
It's not policed - not yet anyway!
I am not bothered, until it affects me, and most people are good at keeping smoke away from others.
If it affects me I tell them.

Sat in an enclosed bar and a gentleman is sat directly under a no smoking sign - puffing away!

As yet, the ban seems to be being ignored on Corfu, and being a smoker I am more than happy about this!!! The locals say that the authorities intend to become strict once the tourists have left. However, today the rain is torrential and I cannot imagine the Greeks hovering outside to have a ciggie!!

Will wait and see I suppose!

Delighted to say that fags here are still cheap and plentiful. Enjoying one right now in the bar.

Lots of people die as the result of being over-weight, but I don't harangue them!

We were in the resort the day the law came in. I asked Marina at the Romanza what would happen now. She just shrugged her shoulders and said they'd continue to allow smoking until they got told off!!

Wonder if the black vampire kumquat dog likes a fag?!
