Yes - I had some Shellac nails done there the other week and they were fantastic and much better than the botch job I had in the UK before I left!

Maria came over from Arillas to do them and she is fab :)

Also sitting in the back room of the salon overlooking the beach and ocean is just a magical way to have your nails done!

Hi all

Arrived back yesterday from a glorious fortnight in SS.

Stayed at Mihalis house (owned by Vagelis) with all my family and we had the most amazing time.  We spent most days either by the pool at the Nafsika (if you were there, can only apologise for the loudness of my little boy...!) or at either St Georges or SS beach.

My 40th birthday was a brill day, we went out to Kassiopi for the day with lunch at Trilogia and some lovely time on the beach there.    My god though, couldn’t believe how many businesses have closed in Kassiopi since I was there in 2009.  The restaurant Strofilia has closed down and that was rammo every night in 2009, also the main hotel on the harbour the Kassimi has also closed its doors as well as the Sconto supermarket!!

Anyway back to SS and my thoughts after four years away:

FoodOverall I thought the food was not quite as good as previous years.  I had a very disappointing meal at Zorba (terrible moussaka) and the Greek night food at the Tereza was not as good as the last time that we were there.  Also the chef from the Nafsika has moved up to Fantasea and the new chef does like to use a bit of salt......!

I thought that the Beachcomber was fantastic, ate there three times and was amazing every time, also my husband had some amazing Sea Bass and Bream at the Nafsika and their grilled chicken fillet at lunchtime was to die for.  ;D

Fantasea was also really really good and we had a great meal at Ozzy Oil.

Delfino Blu really needs to sort its self out.  I will write a separate post on our experience there......!

People and business

We saw a lot of our regular friends including Speros (Nafsika) and Spiros (bikes), Vagelis, George and Stefanos (Thomas Bay, Mediterraneo and now 2 Stars – the guy gets around!).

They all seem to be in good spirits but I get the impression that businesses in SS are struggling on the whole (especially the bars on the main street).  The Condor seemed to be only quarter full on most nights and Acabar and El Greco were also fairly quiet.  Bar 38 and Athens Bar seemed to be doing the most business.  We were told that generally business is roughly 20% down on last year and I definitely think that Acabar for example will be closed by next year.

Tereza has had a face lift in the bar area and was looking really good and is obviously upping its game with Delfino Blu across the road.  The Greek night there was brilliant but the main food course was not quite as good as I remembered it from previous years.   Leo, Captain Nikos and Fanis were all well and Fanis little boy is beautiful.  Tereza, Leo’s wife is due to give birth to a little girl next month.

Speros has a new waiter since I was last there and it is Stefanos who had the Paradise restaurant on the road out to Arillas.   Absolutely amazing guy and we all just love him – superb addition to the Nafsika team and one of the nicest guy’s you will ever meet.   Feel so sorry that he had to close his restaurant a couple of season’s ago but hopefully the economy will pick up shortly and he can reopen again one day

Had my nails done at the new beauty salon Patricia’s (opposite the Olive Press) and Maria did a fantastic job – just lovely sitting there looking out onto the ocean and the beach.   The locals seem to use it quite a bit so hopefully it will fare better than other salon’s have.

It was quite busy but for the middle of August it was nowhere as near busy as it should be – they are still having issues with the Donut man who is apparently paying the fines and selling his wares on the beach again.  The locals are not happy!

I just love the place so much and today being my first day back at work is just horrible.  I am yearning to go back to SS already and will look to book next year’s holiday very soon.  ;)

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: The Chinese! !!!!
« on: August 21, 2013, 01:10:18 PM »
I got back yesterday (update on visit to follow) and Lili did a runner on Friday morning and Peter Jennings (the partner) has also disappeared.

We had dinner with Spiros (bikes) on Sunday night and he confirmed the rumours and said that the locals thought that Peter was still in Corfu (possibly Sidari or Achravi) but Lili had definitely hopped it out of there.

The locals did write on the chalk board outside the restaurant naming Peter and Lili, calling them several names and saying that they owe the locals around €20,000.

A sad state of affairs and not quite sure why they did a flit - we walked past most nights and it was always quite empty though...

Hmmm I have to agree with the negative comments re Olympia, in 30 odd years of coming to San Stef, the only bad meal I have ever had was there in 2008.  My husband is a chef so knows a bit about food and isnt someone who is critical of other chefs but likes to experience different cultures and cuisines, but the meal we had at Olympia was really really bad  :(

However he loves Spiros at Nafsika and they are always gassing about bloody food and recipes whenever we are there!

I do know what people mean about cliqueyness in SS - some regulars do tend to like the preferential treatment offered and newbies sometimes can feel a bit sidelined, but its still a really lovely friendly place and hopefully no one would be put off going back!

We arrive on 5th Aug and staying behind Nafsika at Vagelis' house.   I am bringing €100 a day for me, hubby and Nate (my 3yr old) plus a back up credit card for any additionals!

I have stayed at the Teresa in 2008 and the breakfasts are filling and good and lunch their is very reasonable.

You will be fine  ;)

Hi

I booked through Monarch this year in April and we are going in 2 weeks time (5 Aug) - I paid £245 each from Gatwick to Corfu and my parents paid £280 with Thomsons from East midlands to Corfu.

We are staying at Vagelis' four bed house and its costing €120 a day for the 2 weeks which is €1680 but between 8 of us is actually pretty good.

Its a lot cheaper going independently for us  ;D

S Express by S Express, me and little Spiros (bikes) used to do ridiculous dances to it in Summer Dreams when we were about 16  ;D

Happy times  ;)

yep - I was there for the storm in Sept 2008 and the Teresa had quite a lot of damage occur.

It was pretty frightening at one point and the storm and rain raged for about 24 hours in the end and we spent several hours once evening watching Night at the Museum in the Teresa bar with other guests.

Let's hope we don't get any kind of reoccurence this August!! :)

Where to stay / Re: VILLAS
« on: June 03, 2013, 08:04:06 PM »
Hi Harry

We are staying in Vagelis house (behind the Nafsika) in August this year and the house officially sleeps 8 but there are actually going to be 10 of us (including 3 children) and as it has 4 double bedrooms we should manage it quite easily as our son (3) will sleep with us and the other 2 girls (7 and 11) are going to have an extra cot put in 2 of the bedrooms so it all works fine.

The website is www.vagelisapartments.com  if you want to have a look.

We really struggled to find anything with there being so many of us, and this was the best option we could find.

Hope this helps
Sophia

Just had another look at the webcam and its looking hot and toasty on the beach!  ;D

Tractor is on there cleaning up but there also seems to be a sort of kiddies pool in shallows with sand built around it?

I'm bringing my 3 year old in August for his first holiday and its a brilliant idea to keep kids safe in the water with the sand acting as a barrier to the deeper water.

Was this there last year or it is new?

San Stefanos news and views / Dino
« on: April 26, 2013, 07:41:47 PM »
I meant to post this a few weeks ago and not sure if someone else has and I missed it.

Basically my parents got word a few weeks ago from friends in the village that Dino (car hire) has died.   Apparently they think it was a heart attack.

For those that knew Dino, he was a lovely guy and not that old either so it has been a bit of a shock for the SS residents.

Anyway just wanted to let you know if you didnt already  :'(
