Sorry, Diane!

Barbara - It's not that hard really. And it is more or less phonetic, unlike English. What does feel strange is writing each letter separately - no joined-up writing in Greek.

I'm half-Welsh. My mother came from Merthyr. The picture was taken at Little Prince when I was not at my best, but just say "Where's Jim?" The will know.

We're always saying what we'll do: hire a car and drive around the island, visit St George's Bay, jog along the surf at 6 in the morning, and so on.

After 48 hours of "acclimatisation" we're so chilled-out we frankly can't be bothered. That is the magic of the place. We're staying at the wonderful Nafsika again in July, and I know that there will be days when we won't be arsed to walk the thirty yards to the beach. Go with ambitions - but be prepared to dump them in the face of overwhelming laziness!!!!

Phonetically (caps = stress):

kaleemAIRra (Good morning)
poo EEnay ee twalETTa? (Where is the loo?)
echfarestOO (Thank you) (ch is like ch in Scottish "loch")
parakalOW (Please)
YAsoo (Hello/Goodbye to one person
YAsass (Hello/Goodbye politely or to more than one person)
EKetay AYna traPAYzee ya THEEo? (Have you go a table for two?)
NAY (Yes)
Ochee (No) - the ch is a bit like clearing your throat.
MEEa BEEra meGALee, parakLOW (Large beer please)
MEEa BEEra meeCREE, parakalOW ( small beer please - although this phrase is rarely used)
EE Cerys EEnay polEE orAYa (Cerys is very beautiful) (See you in the bar, Cerys)

Also useful:
(KAn eye leev sum munny 4 a dreenk 4 Jeembo EEf he cums EEN?)

Try it - it's fun. Although most of the Greeks in Ag Stef speak English better than most of the tourists, they enjoy a good a laugh at our linguistic incompetence!

It's important to stress very heavily. They say it's impossible to stress too much in Greek. Stressing the final vowel is very hard for English speakers.

I actually think it would be wonderful if someone would run a Basic Greek course. Very simple. A few sessions (say 10 to 10:45) for a few Euros each.

The boat's easy:

(1)   Boats are usually on the water
(2)   The water is at the edge of the town
(3)   The boat leaves from the Old Harbour, which is sensibly placed next to the water
(4)   The Old Harbour is next to the Old Fort
(5)   The Old Fort is a stonking great rock with a castle on the top
(6)   Useful phrases (a) - "Where is the sea, parakalo?"
(7)   Useful phrases (b) - "Is that gigantic rock with a castle on the top The Old Fort?"
(8.)   If you are at the edge of the sea and the Old Fort is to your right walk past it
(9)   Go down the steps to the harbour level
(10) The boat should be floating in the water. If it has sunk, ask for your money back
(11 ) More useful phrases: "I've lost my husband - fancy a drink big boy?"
(12) Notes: Water is the blue wet stuff that laps on the shores of Kerkyra
(13) Notes: Water is also the blue wet stuff you can jump into off the boat on the way home
(14) More useful phrases: "Yassou, Captain. My husband jumped off the boat and he's swimming to the shore. Can we leave now?"

(15a) Addition notes: If you don't know which way the sea is, ask: "Poo eenay ee thalassa?"
(16b) Additional notes: It is not essential and possibly risky to to take a husband on trips. They'd be happier in the bar

Have fun!

(17) Stupid forum turns numbers into smileys.

Gav's right, this is the best route, maybe a bit longer but nowhere near as steep and on mostly Tarmac roads

It rather depends upon where you start from. Going that way you're also on the main road - the other routes are more "rural." Starting from the old village (Nafsika, Fedra Mare, Anatoli etc) you're better off with the Juice Bar/Church options. The "Juice Bar" way is fairly steep, but very short. The "Church" way is really not hard work. Of course, if, like Waspman, you're on a quad-bike and have descended from the Olympian heights of Romanza, the tarmac road is an advantage, although I've heard that riding on rough tracks helps to get rid of the cellulite on the bum (not that I've got any).

Whichever way you go, a glass of Retsina with the smoked salmon salad and great views of the islands will reward your efforts with a sense of joy, peace and fulfillment.

The quickest route is to turn sharp left past the Juice Bar on the beach road (just opposite San Stef Travel - otherwise known as the abode of the Three Graces of Agios Stefanos). Just keep going up past Tsaros - it's not that bad - and then turn left at the T-junction. (If you don't turn left or right you will fall 100 feet into the sea). Small rise takes you to Akrotiri. Try the smoked salmon salad - it's fabulous.

If you are (sensibly) staying on the old village, there's a nice, reasonably gentle, route. Turn left up the hill just before the church on the harbour road and follow the track. This takes a right turn and brings you out at the top of promontory, and you can stroll down with great views until you reach Akrotiri. Did I mention the smoked salmon salad?

There's a variation on this route for the impatient. Where the track turns right, go up the hillside, squeeze through the fence gaps, and you will end up in Arianna's. This is a hut and gardens, where you can buy a much needed drink. You may well encounter the lovely little girl after whom the enterprise is named. She has an English mother, and you will not need to speak pigeon Greek. She may well dance, sing, recite and generally perform her best acts for you. If you're a primary school teacher on holiday I'd give this one a miss, otherwise, it's lovely.

Akrotiri is a beautiful bar, and in our opinion one of the treasures of the village.

I guess - and it's only a guess, obviously - that the statement by a Bank of England official that interest rates may go up slightly in 2015 is likely to cool this down a bit.

The rate is currently still very good (1.1970 on TravelFX today) - although not quite as high as it was.

Get the 10:30 bus, wander around the village, then have lunch and walk back down through the olive groves. Lovely!
