Chrissyann - WINKIE is right. Our friends think we're mad - they jet off to Vietnam or wherever - and simply can't understand why we're going back again to Agios Stephanos for the fifth year.

I remember WINKIE sending me a private mail about Little Prince. I think the information I gave was accurate. How many times is it this year, WINKIE?

It's not frenetic, it's not surrounded by great Hellenic sites, it's not particularly cute - but the views of the islands offshore, the sunsets, and the sheer relaxing ambiance together with the warmth of the local people make it almost irresistibly seductive.

You have to try it. Many of us did. Some have been back for more twenty years. All I can say is that when I arrive in the village it immediately feels like I'm at home.

TravelFX rate is up a tiny amount at 1.1936 today (21-1- 2013)

Not a huge amount, but every little helps!

It's at the top of the hill on the road from Agios Stephanos to Arillas. In other word, halfway between the villages.

The pound is very strong against the Euro at the moment. Probably worth buying.

Today (Jan 20 2013) TravelFX.co.uk is selling at 1.1930, which is the highest it's been for a very long time.

Post office is 1.186 (online). TravelFX remains probably the best rate in the UK at least.

I'll post here again if it goes up, which I doubt!

Since the sad demise of the internet version of Athens news, I've found this a useful source:

For those who want to see a bit more than beach and bars, there's now an English language Greek news magazine on-line:

Well done the 13-year old Greek girl who won the world Junior Chess championship!

As for the "most traditional dishes," that's a very difficult question to answer. Greek food is regional. Every family cooks its "traditional" dishes in a slightly different way, much as a Sunday roast will vary from family to family in the UK.

On the whole I suspect that less olive oil is used in tavernas than would be the case at home.

Spiros, at Nafsika, is very knowledgeable about Greek food, and will usually have at least one really authentic special on the menu. Spiros is usually very happy to talk about it, and after a suitable number of visits you might even get a specially-cooked ultra-authentic dish. Corfiot food is highly influenced by the Italians, so there are probably more pasta-based dishes than in Aegean.

I was just thinking to myself, I wonder if other holiday forums are as obsessed with food as this one?

Maybe it's to do with age. When I started going to Greece the food was absolutely terrible. Remember those old Tourist Police menus with hundreds of items, of which about four actually had a price pencilled in? Remember the tooth-busting souvlaki, the fossilised kelftiko, the cold chips that looked like pale fingers chopped off in a mortuary and preserved in formaldehyde? And so on.

We didn't give a toss about the food. We swam a lot, drunk a lot of Greek champagne at about £1 a bottle while gambolling in the surf, got ratted, laughed a lot, screwed a lot and danced in the discos until the early hours. Maybe it's a sign of the age of the clientèle here that the size of the starters has become more important than sex in the surf.

Helen - They're usually pretty tied down by Thomson until 6 days before. I would really try to discuss the options with Dimitris and Michalis beforehand.

You may have to wait for reply. Dimitris is not always very swift to read emails. Bless.

Even stranger - Theodora's moussaka has to be the best in Ag Stef. Was it when she and Georgios were away in the USA?
