Correct on pre-paid cards maybe Cerys, but on the no load/commission credit cards I have mentioned they do not incur charges in Corfu, unless the retailer (taverna or shop) advises you in advance in which case you can decline the transaction.  I have only had one occasion where a taverna (The Nafsika) wished to incur a 2% surcharge, I declined. On other occasions the retailer has absorbed any bank charges.

By far the best and cheapest way of spending money abroad is by the "no load/commission" credit card, but only if you pay the balance off in full every month.  With this type of card it's far cheaper to spend on them (tavernas and supermarkets) than withdraw cash and spend it.

It's likely that you will only get one of these cards if you have a good credit rating and are the type who does not go into debt, otherwise it's the pre-paid card to go for.

The current best at present is the Halifax Clarity Card, you don't have to be a Halifax customer to apply for one.
There is no foreign exchange fee worldwide and there is no cash withdrawal fee, unlike most other cards, however you will be charged interest from the date you withdraw the cash (the same as all other cards) but fairly low interest at 12.9%, so set up a direct debit to pay it off in full every month.
There are extra benefits if you have a Halifax Reward current account

There are a couple of others which are nearly as good if you have them, Post Office (£3 cash withdrawal fee), Nationwide (£2 cash withdrawal fee) and Santander Zero (no cash withdrawal fee) but no fees on any of them if using in tavernas or shops.

A lot of pre-paid cards have start up fees, ATM withdrawal fees (FairFX is 1.5 € for each withdrawal), inactivity fees (both My Travel Cash and Travelex charge a £2 monthly inactivity fee once a card has not been used for 12 months. FairFX and Caxton FX do not)

Another thing to remember is if the retailer gives you the choice of paying  in £'s or euros, always choose euros or you will lose out.

Last year only one of the several tavernas and supermarkets would not accept any type of card, The Beachcomber.

In 2012 I was getting about 0.05 to 0.06 euros above the San Stefanos exchange rate, food for thought.

Yes, very interesting post Andy, but with so much information you sound very much like someone else!

It's the Greek for "of the stars" or a Titan of that name. Pronounced aster EE a

Like Jimbo, I can use the Internet as well:

"Asteria" is the modern Greek word for "stars". It is pronounced "aah-stare-ya". The singular wordstem "astro-" is from Greek and used to refer to the studies of stars, or things that were thought to be stars, for example, astronomy, asteroid, astrophysics and so on.

At ATM's abroad you may well get 0% loading and no cash withdrawal fee on certain credit cards, but it's very likely that you will pay interest from the day the cash is withdrawn even if you repay in full.

Some foreign ATM providers may charge a fee but this should be made clear to you at the time of withdrawal.

At present the best available is the Halifax Clarity credit card.

Wetherspoon’s are holding a real ale festival from 3-21st April 2013.  I tried the Corfu Ionian Coffee Porter today, very nice.

Klaudio Mousakitis is the brother of Dimitri who works behind the bar at The Romanza.

Definetly got a look of doughnut man, I believe Mr.Doughnut is revamping his business for 2013 which will include a few new lines including the ' Donut head massage and the full body Donut tension release massage' including a free piece of fruit! ;D ;D

I hear the doughnut man has a new song from the film High Noon that he'll be singing whilst walking along the beach,
"Doughnut forsake me o my darling"

You have a great way with words Jimbo when you attack somebody as having a "tiny mind" then say that most of the aggression has come from others.

I will agree though that this thread has run it's course and probably needs locking up.

Completely agree

Have you actually got any legs? Had it ever crossed your tiny mind that you could move?

What a selfish and biased comment from a man who was apparently a BBC news producer/presenter (reading, writing and evaluating news and never been sued, that's a surprise) also is/was an author, play-write, not to mention a person adept in metaphysics.

Surely, from such a learned person, one would expect a more balanced viewpoint of a habit that causes countless diseases and deaths in both adults and children.

Why the hell should Bristle Boy (the one with the tiny mind) move? Perhaps it would be beneficial to all if the person causing the potential health problems moved!

Adequate educational qualifications maybe, but adequate sense?

« on: March 16, 2013, 07:03:52 PM »
The beer from the local brewery is excellent. They brew lighter and heavier ales, all delicious. They're more expensive than Mythos etc, but those proponents of DIY holidays to support the local economy should drink nothing else!

Not dearer than Mythos if you buy direct from the brewery, considerably cheaper.

Hey Debs, my wife does the hill up to 4 times a day, she's a fit bird, you've seen her.  It's a nice stroll to walk off the food at 10-11 o'clock in the evening, personally I prefer the quad bike.
