Snakes.
« on: September 01, 2013, 07:19:54 PM »
Read on a post that someone saw snakes in the little stream near the Barras  :o.We are looking to do a few walks around the hills on our next visit, and these are something we have not thought about.Anyone shine some light on these critters in the village,as wifie is terrified now,are they dangerous and in numbers.

There are quite a few species (10 I think) of snakes in Corfu - only one is poisonous. But snakes are much more scared of you and will do there best to avoid you.
The snakes in the stream are most probable grass snakes and are not poisonous.
Personally I have never seen a snake on my walks around the surrounding countryside, but they are certainly not uncommon, as I said they will do their best to avoid you.
I don't think there is anything to worry about but if you do happen to see one give it plenty of space.

I saw the snakes in the stream and they were definitely grass snakes. I've ever seen a snake one other timein all my years and it was a python type snake in the road that hadbeen run over but that was on the road to Kassiopi and well outside SS!

Having lived in the African bush with the some of the most poisonous snakes in the world (mambas, cobras, puff adders) I can safely say that there's not much on Corfu that will harm you.

Walk in a heavy-footed way and they will run away because they are sensitive to vibrations. If you happen across a light-brown snake, just stand still. It will go away. They prefer frogs!

I seen quite a large snake in the undergrowth near Terezas in June. I'd guess it was 4-5ft in length and quite girthy, dark green in colour.

Nothing to worry about though, it scuttled off as soon as I got close.

We went for a walk, up to the Abandoned hotel, on the road up to it, I almost stood on a little grass snake. The best advise I would give is, don't bother going up to the Abandoned hotel.

There was a snake on the beach last Friday near the sea edge - only a small one but once spotted it dashed over to the bushes
