Money
The official currency is now the euro.
Cashpoint
There is one cashpoint is in San Stef which is outside Thomas Bay Hotel.
However, some shops, supermarkets hotels and bars will accept your credit card. Many will levy a surcharge in order to recover their processing costs, please check first.
It’s common to be charged 2% for foreign exchange purchases on cash or travelers cheques.
It’s common to be charged a handling fee when paying by credit card.
Banks
There are no banks outside of Corfu Town although many Tourist Information Offices and Hotels will exchange your Travelers Cheques and Sterling. Look for the exchange sign.
Credit cards
Most large shops, restaurants, hotels and car hire firms accept major international credit cards, although a majority of shops and bars will only accept cash.
Travellers Cheques
Travellers Cheques can be cashed at San Stefanos Travel, the Thomson Office and at many of the hotels, you will need your passport as ID.
Mosquitoes
Can be a nuisance although they are easily controlled with repellents and small electric machines which can be purchased from the local shops. The best we have found so far is a Boots clear non perfume repellent, seems to work when others fail!
Toilet
Greek plumbing leaves a lot to be desired! as it uses small bore pipes, so bins are provided for toilet paper. It must not be flushed down the loo!
Telephones
Many shops have metered telephones for which you must purchase a phone card in advance.
Emergencies
Dial 100, an all purpose emergency number, or contact your local tourist representative.
